摘要

•Chronic abdominal pain (AP) was reported by 27% of adolescents.•8.2% met the Rome III Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) criteria.•Depression rate was more than doubled among AP and IBS cases.•Depression was strongly associated with AP distribution and intensity, and co-morbid pain.•Symptoms distinguishing IBS from other types of AP (e.g. diarrhea, constipation) were not independently related to depression.
