A multi-tracer study of groundwater origin and transit-time in the aquifers of the Venice region (Italy)

•Geochemical data shows Venice groundwater results from 4-end member mixing.•Groundwater overexploitation leads to young water inputs into an old system.•14C, 39Ar, 4He ages agree when heterogeneity in in situ production is considered.•14C, 39Ar, 4He ages agree when dead-carbon diffusion from aquitard is considered.•Comparison with isotope data made 40years ago reveals changes in aquifer dynamic.
