•Canine degenerative myelopathy (CDM) is a naturally occurring animal model for human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).•Sensory involvement seems to play an important role in CDM progression.•Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of CDM.•Altered autophagy function occurs in both CDM and ALS.•The CDM disease model may serve to develop therapeutic strategies for ALS.
