•SRTM DEM had higher accuracy than ASTER GDEM.•Vegetation smoothed DEM improved the hydrodynamic model results.•Hydrologically-corrected DEM improved the hydrodynamic model results.•The hydrodynamic model reached optimum performance at grid size of 120m.
