Selection of biological indicators appropriate for European soil monitoring

•Measures of both biodiversity and ecosystem function scored highly as biological indicators.•The top ranking indicator was ‘Bacteria and Archaea diversity measured by molecular methods’.•Indicators scoring highly in technical ease of use were not ranked highest overall.
