Readiness potentials driven by non-motoric processes

•We utilize a novel task to isolate motor and non-motor contributions to the RP.•We show that robust RPs occur in the absence of movement.•We show that motor processes do not significantly modulate the RP.•Thus, the RP is unlikely to reflect preconscious motor planning or preparation.•The RP may instead reflect decision-related or anticipatory processes.
