More illness in offspring of bipolar patients from the U.S. compared to Europe

•Offspring from the US showed a significantly higher incidence of psychiatric problems.•This included depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and “other” illness.•US parents have earlier onsets and more comorbidities than the Europeans.•The parent’s own adverse illness characteristics related to more offspring illness.•Earlier recognition and treatment of offspring’s illnesses would appear indicated.
