•First study to investigate if impaired cognitive function may predict ECT treatment outcome.•The sample consisted of 65 non-demented elderly patients with major depression.•Mental speed, verbal memory and aspects of executive function were assessed at baseline.•Cognitive function at baseline is most likely not a predictor of ECT treatment outcome.
