•MMSN@GELs were prepared for targeted delivery of anticancer drug.•The diffusion of paclitaxel entrapped in mesopores can be retarded by gelatin shell.•The carriers guided by an external magnetic field demonstrated an improved tumor targeted efficacy.•The loaded Paclitaxel had enhanced tumor treatment efficacy and low systematic toxicity.
