Quantity and quality of food losses along the Swiss potato supply chain: Stepwise investigation and the influence of quality standards on losses

•We assessed the quantity and quality of potato losses along the entire supply chain.•The influence of quality standards on the extent of potato losses was quantified.•The majority of potato losses is used as animal feed.•Approximately half of all potatoes are lost somewhere from field to plate.•Approximately half of the potato losses are quality driven.
