•Secondary fuels were produced from paper industry wastes by pelletization.•Paper industry wastes were studied under thermogravimetric analysis.•Paper industry wastes were successfully gasified in a circulating fluidized bed.•The producer gas had a heating value of 5MJ/Nm3.•Gasification was an acceptable waste recovery option for production of energy.
