•We examine the explanatory variables of distorted perceptions of travel time.•Perceived time is a function of other time components and commuter characteristics.•The explanatory variables for overperceiving and underperceiving samples are different.•Increasing the frequency and an appropriate location of stops are called to improve the perception.
