•Earlier stem extension of wheat will be possible under climate change without increasing frost risk.•Current early genotypes, in particular those carrying the insensitive PpdD1—spring Vrn3 allele combination, show a strong response to temperature undesirable to match the future target window for stem extension.•Marker-based phenology modeling shows good predictive ability.•Consequences for ideotype design are discussed.
