Efficient degradation of sulfamethazine with CuCo 2 O 4 spinel nanocatalysts for peroxymonosulfate activation

•Using CuCo2O4 spinel NPs for peroxide activation.•The energy barrier of SMZ degradation by CuCo2O4/PMS is much lower than by CuFe2O4/PMS.•Efficient cobalt reactivity in CuCo2O4 and its high reduction potential of Co3+/Co2+.•Nearly 98% of SMZ can be successfully degraded by CuCo2O4/PMS within 20min.•CuCo2O4 NPs demonstrated extremely the low metal leachability and a high reusability.
