•A renewable amphoteric functionalized mesoporous silica (AG-SBA-15) was synthesized and characterized.•AG-SBA-15 was effective to remove Cu(II) and Cr2O72− from aqueous solution simultaneously.•AG-SBA-15 could immobilize Cr(VI) by reduction.•AG-SBA-15 showed good regeneration and reusability.
