•Pear fruit was treated with 1-MCP and stored at 8°C.•Volatiles concentrations increased during storage in control and 1-MCP treated fruit.•1-MCP inhibited the production of total volatiles, especially ester.•Expression of PuLOXs and PuAAT were suppressed by 1-MCP treatment.
