•A comparison of effect of different chemical pretreatments was studied on rice bran biomass.•Rice bran biomass was studied for Ni(II) removal.•Inorganic pretreated rice bran biomasses were found best among all the pretreated biomasses.•HNO3 was found best desorbent for NaRB and HARB.
