•Immature rats received i.p. injections of MnCl2 for 5 days in a critical period of brain development.•In adulthood, rats submitted to behavioral tasks displayed motor and short-term memory deficits.•GFAP content was increased in the striatum on PND70.•Hippocampal and striatal antioxidant parameters were altered.•Oxidative stress may contribute to Mn-induced developmental neurotoxicity.
