•Retinoic acid and valproic acid doses that did not increase in the incidence of physical malformation in zebrafish were tested for developmental neurobehavioral toxicology.•Both retinoic acid and valproic acid exposures during development disrupted larval activity.•Both retinoic acid and valproic acid exposures during development caused persisting decreased social affiliation.
