•Heavily-doped Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ phosphors with a strong PL under 422nm excitation.•The relaxation of the selection rule on the forbidden intra-transition caused by the increment of Mn–O orbital intermixing.•The solid solubility limit of Mn2+ in Zn2SiO4 host was measured as 9mol%.
