摘要

•The ability of Pd to mediate reduction of N2 has been found.•N2 is reduced to NH3 with H2 on Pd surfaces under mild conditions.•N2 on Pd is activated in molecular form and reacts with H atoms.•It is likely N2 is activated by cluster-like rugged structures on Pd surfaces.
