A new method of relating a chord length distribution to a bubble size distribution for vertical bubbly flows

•A new model is proposed for determining local bubble size distribution.•Multiple bubble groups of different sizes and shapes are considered.•The shape factor of bubble groups is estimated unlikely in previous methods.•Validation experiment on a vertical bubbly flow in a narrow channel is presented.
