•Category uncertainty failed to cause the uncanny valley effect.•Rather, the eeriest and coldest faces were the least ambiguous.•Realism inconsistency heightened the eeriness of humans and animals but not objects.•This effect was stronger when realism in the eyes, eyelashes, and mouth was low.
