Hepatoprotection using sweet orange peel and its bioactive compound, hesperidin, for CCl 4 -induced liver injury in vivo

•WESP reduces ALT and AST levels in rat liver induced by CCl4.•HD at 0.1mg/kgbw does not offer protection against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity.•WESP attenuates oxidative stress because it restores GSH and SOD and GPx activity.•The defense mechanisms of WESP is maintenance of the normal redox status.
