Precise U-Pb baddeleyite age dating of the Usushwana Complex, southern Africa – Implications for the Mesoarchaean magmatic and sedimentological evolution of the Pongola Supergroup, Kaapvaal Craton

•The Usushwana Complex (Piet Retief Gabbro Suite) was dated to ca. 2.99–2.98Ga.•A SE-trending dolerite dyke was dated to ca. 2.98Ga.•A dolerite sill in the Mozaan Group was dated to ca. 2.87Ga.•The Piet Retief Gabbro Suite is over 100 Myr older than previously thought.•The Piet Retief Gabbro Suite is broadly coeval with volcanic rocks in the Nsuze Group.
