The influence of risk mitigation measures on the risks, costs and routing of CO 2 pipelines

•We calculate locational and societal risks for several CO2 pipeline configurations.•We analyze if rerouting or installing risk mitigation measures is cost-effective.•Gaseous CO2 leads to higher risks than dense phase CO2 pipeline transport.•Mitigation measures are needed for gaseous, but not for dense phase CO2 transport.•Increasing pressure to avoid pumps can be interesting from a risk perspective.
