The roles and effectiveness of design in new product development : a study of Irish manufacturers

•We provide evidence of the value of employing designers in different roles in the NPD process.•We find employing designers as specialists or in a bridging role increases innovation significantly.•Employing designers continuously increases innovation by around a fifth.•Our results suggest complementarity between R&D and design engagement within the NDP process.
