The emergence of openness: How and why firms adopt selective revealing in open innovation

•Open innovation may be boosted when firms deliberately waive some of their intellectual property rights.•We study how and why firms in the computer component industry adopt such “selective revealing”.•This learning process was triggered by customer demand and further driven by positive experiences.•As a result, “openness” developed into a new dimension of competition.
