•The complex marine environment was divided in natural and human-made systems.•Exergy based CFs for resource extraction in natural marine systems were calculated.•Exergy based spatial and temporal CFs for occupation of human-made marine systems.•The resource footprint (CEENE method) of marine areal occupation could be determined.
