Background and aims: We set up the clinical practice group in 2009 to create a multidisciplinary forum for service improvement on our PICU. Prior to this the implementation of new ideas occurred on an ad-hoc basis with a lack of integration between nursing and medical teams. Aims: The senior medical and nursing staff therefore decided to form a clinical practice group for PICU to improve development and implementation of new practice. Methods: The constitution of the group includes medical and nursing staff from a variety of grades and prior experience. There are close links to the allied health teams who consult on specific projects where necessary. Our goals on forming the group were: To facilitate the development of good clinical practice on PICU. To facilitate the implementation of current and future clinical guidelines. To facilitate communication between groups of staff who participate in changes to clinical practice on PICU. Results: Some of the projects we have completed are detailed below: Care bundles Ventilated associated pneumonia Central line insertion Guidelines Haemofiltration guideline Asthma guideline Gentamicin clinical guideline Emergency intubation checklist Ventilation management guideline Documentation Drug prescription stickers Prescribed care plans Emergency drug sheet updates Combined charting for cardiac patients Implementation of new practice Change in structure to ward rounds New mouth care package Conclusions: Improved multidisciplinary working. Coordination of guideline and practice developments. Open forum for supporting innovation and new ideas from all levels and disciplines.
