•Maize ZmAFL2 and ZmAFL3/ZmVp1 are putative orthologs of FUS3 and ABI3, respectively.•Maize ZmAFL4, ZmAFL5 and ZmAFL6 are putative co-orthologs of LEC2.•Conserved expression profiles of FUS3 and ABI3 between dicots and monocots.•ZmAFL4 knockdown perturbs carbon metabolism and reduces starch content.•ZmAFL3/ZmVp1 and ZmAFL4 trans-activate a maize oleosin promoter.
