Gonadal steroids, gonadotropins and DHEAS in young adults with familial hypercholesterolemia who had initiated statin therapy in childhood

•Statin treatment in FH children might affect gonadal and adrenal function by lowering cholesterol.•Hormones in young adults with FH were assessed before and after 10 years of statin treatment.•After 10 years of statins, gonadal steroid and gonadotropin levels are within reference intervals.•After 10 years of statins, gonadal steroid and gonadotropin levels are equal to unaffected siblings.•Statins in FH subjects could be safely used from childhood onwards to prevent premature CVD.
