Energy management at the distribution grid using a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

•BESS is utilized to manage intermittent renewable resources on a power system addressing circuit and system level issues.•Optimization algorithm for the charging and discharging of a BESS connected to grid with high renewables penetration.•BESS is used for peak load shaving and power curve smoothing of a distribution grid load.•Simulation results on the BESS in Maui grid are used to validate the proposed method.
