Characterisation of resin transfer moulded composite laminates under high rate tension, compression and shear loading

•Crash performance of CFRP was investigated with advanced high rate test equipment.•Significant strain rate dependency of the material properties was quantified.•Periodic strain concentration was measured and related to multiple fracture events.•A high-speed infrared camera was applied in tests at high strain rates.•Local adiabatic heating up to 50K between the fibre rovings was observed.
