Commentary 3: Harvey Whiteford re: Impressions of Psychiatry in Australia by David Goldberg

The last two months (August and September, 2000) have been spent as the Meigunyah Visiting Fellow at the University of Melbourne. My main duty was to deliver a public lecture on the future of mental health services, but Bruce Singh gave me the opportunity to visit many of the facilities managed by Mr Chris Gibbs of the North West Mental Programme as well as others further afield, and two private mental health facilities in the State of Victoria. In addition, it was possible to have both formal and informal meetings with many groups of general practitioners both in Victoria and at the Annual Meeting of National Divisions of General Practice which was held in Brisbane during my visit.
