Altruistic sharing behavior in children: Role of theory of mind and inhibitory control

•Altruistic sharing behavior was assessed in preschoolers and school-age children.•Theory of mind and inhibitory control were measured with various tests.•Older children were more willing to share than younger children.•Inhibitory control may play a role when deciding how much to share.•Theory of mind does not significantly contribute to altruistic behavior.
