Agent-based model of maritime traffic in piracy-affected waters

•We developed an agent-based simulation of maritime traffic in piracy-affected waters.•The simulation includes a global merchant traffic model utilizing a voyage planner.•Behaviors and interactions of merchant, navy, and pirate vessels are modeled.•A novel methodology for data-driven calibration of spatial simulation models was used.•A case study of using the model for designing transit corridor systems is presented.
