•Boron removal efficiency of 98% was obtained in the preliminary study with EC.•Boron removal efficiency of 96.7% was obtained in produced water treatment with EC.•Adsorption was best fitted to Pseudo Second order kinetics.•Thermodynamics was exothermic.•Hydrated borate compounds were recovered from EC flocs.
