Sample Depletion, Fractionation, And Enrichment For Biomarker Discovery

Abstract Over the last two decades, there has been an increased effort in the search for disease markers that required the development of technologies capable of extracting, separating, identifying, and quantifying large numbers of proteins (proteome) and metabolites (metabolome) within biological samples. The complexity and dynamic concentration range of these mixtures has made the development of effective fractionation methods a critical component of this effort. This chapter highlights the electrophoretic and chromatographic methods that have been developed for the depletion, fractionation, and concentration of proteins, peptides, and metabolites present in biological fluids and tissues.
