Placenta: 6 − 4 = 2

A 34-year-old infertile woman wanted to conceive. After she was given menotropins, she soon became pregnant. Ultrasound revealed 6 fetuses. Selective reduction was performed to lessen the possibility of later complications. At term, she underwent normal spontaneous vaginal delivery of healthy twins and a placenta. Gross examination of the placenta showed portions of 2 umbilical cords and 4 papyraceus fetuses (Figure 1, arrowheads), 1 of which contained a prominent rudimentary eye (Figure 2, arrowhead).
