Members of the third domain of life, the Archaea, exhibit a number of different cell surface structures which are similar in assembly and function to bacterial type IV pili. These pili have been shown to be involved in processes like attachment, motility, and the exchange of DNA in Archaea. Intriguingly, the archaeal flagellum, called the archaellum, functionally resembles the bacterial flagellum, although it is structurally alike type IV pili.
