The classical nucleation equation of Volmer can be derived from fluctuation theory, Gibbs’ result for the work to form a critical nucleus, and the rate of collision with vapor molecules with the critical nucleus, without using the “capillarity approximation”. However, this “approximation” can be derived from thermodynamic equations. Corrections to Volmer’s equation are based on questionable assumptions of equilibrium.
