Coupling modulation using microring-based light drop structure which removes the pattern dependence problem is proposed. Extinction ratio improvement from 3 dB to > 30 dB in 40 Gb/s NRZ signal is obtained with 25X smaller drive voltage. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
