•We construct a multi-country employer-employee data.•We examine the effects of last-in, first-out rules on worker mobility and wages.•The exit rate is lower for more senior workers in Sweden in shrinking firms and among low-wage workers.•We observe a steeper seniority-wage profile in Sweden.
