Genetic diversity and cryptolepine concentration of Cryptolepis sanguinolenta (Lindl). Schlt. from selected regions of Ghana

•Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is a medicinal plant used in the treatment of Malaria.•Study was conducted to determine genetic diversity and to identify plant genotypes with high cryptolepine concentrations.•Soil characteristics had no influence on active ingredient (cryptolepine) concentration in the plant.•Cryptolepine concentration in the roots was twice the amount in the stem.•Results pave the way for the cultivation of elite genotypes of Cryptolepis sanguinolenta.
