To determine the tensile stress-strain Curves and strength of ceramics at high strain rates, a modified dynamic three-point bending experimental technique is proposed in this paper. Based on the traditional three-point bending testing method, the modification is to mount a strain gage on the central position of the tensile face of the specimen, which is used for directly measuring the tensile strain during the specimen being subjected to an impact load with a SHPB apparatus. A finite-element simulation is carried out to evaluate the test errors of this new technique. The dynamic stress-strain curves of a kind of alumina ceramic at the strain rates of 75 s(-1), 250 s(-1), 380 s(-1), and 1300 s(-1) are obtained by using this modified apparatus.
