Blood biochemical alterations following various therapies in Surti buffaloes with postpartum metritis.

This study was carried out under field condition on 40 postpartum metritic Surti buffaloes divided into five groups each of 08 animals. The study included use of four treatment lines and one control group viz., Group I- Metronidazole (500 mg) I/U for 5 days; Group II- Ciprofloxacin (1500 mg) and Tinidazole (1800 mg) I/U for 5 days; Group III- Ciprofloxacin (1500 mg) and Tinidazole (1800 mg) I/U for 5 days plus PGF2? 25 mg i/m once on first day; Group IV- Ceftiofur (long acting) @ 6.6 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously once and Group V (control)- Normal saline I/U for 5 days. The effects of these therapeutic regimes were evaluated by comparing the clinical response and changes in plasma biochemical constituents before and 6 days after treatment. The mean plasma aspartate amino transferase values on day 6 post-treatment in groups I to IV were significantly (P<0.01) lower than the pre-treatment values. The levels of plasma total protein, albumin and globulin on day 6 post-treatment in these groups were significantly (P<0.01) higher than the pre-treatment values. No significant difference was however observed in pretreatment and post-treatment values of these traits in control group. Blood urea nitrogen did not show significant variation between pre and posttreatment values in any of the groups. The mean plasma calcium concentrations following 6-days treatment in were significantly (P<0.01) higher all four groups than the pre-treatment values. However no such difference was observed in plasma inorganic phosphorus concentrations pre and post-treatment in any of the groups. The changes in the blood biochemical profile were related to the degree of improvement of metritis in animals under different treatment.
