Why Do Students Skip Class And Not Sit Exams? Data And Reflections On University Absenteeism And Exam No-Shows

Student absenteeism and high dropout rates are widespread problems in Spanish universities that raise doubts about the university model itself. The objective of this study is to provide some data and reflections on the basis of our teaching experience. We analyse the size of the problem and its possible causes using previous research and go on to present our findings with respect to a tactical-operational subject in Operations Management. The research methodology takes in an online survey of the reasons why 2009-10 academic year students of the subject did not regularly attend class, on the one hand, and a field experiment carried out during three consecutive academic years (2006-7 to 2008-9) when different assessment systems were used and data collected on the number of students sitting exams, on the other. The results show that the main causes of absenteeism are related to the availability of teaching materials and students' own attitudes and that periodic tests at the end of each teaching unit contribute towards increased numbers of students sitting their exams.
