Accumulating evidence indicates an association between the development of obesity and disturbances of the circadian regulation of physiology. Disruption of circadian rhythms can be caused by shift work, jet lag, aging, depression and sleep disorders. It remains unclear, however, what the precise contribution of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the central circadian pacemaker, is in the regulation of energy homeostasis.
