Stability-enhanced polydopamine coatings on solid substrates by iron(III) coordination

•Stability-enhanced polydopamine coating was achieved by a very simple way.•It does not require complicated steps or instruments.•The resulting surface showed enhanced stability in the presence of a strong alkali.•The chemical stability can be reversibly controlled by addition/removal of iron(III).
